Back To 60 Twitter

Twitter has started rolling out its new design and user interface to users all over the world. Unfortunately, whether its because they don't like change or the new interface requires more clicks to perform various functions, people are not happy with the new look.

If the new interface has been rolled out to your account and you are not happy with it, you will be happy to learn that there is a trick that can get you back to the old version.

  1. ASTOUNDING SUPPORT!! Dear Friends You have knocked us out with your generosity - thank you, all, so much. It is also a pleasure to read your comments which supporters enjoy, too. As we fast approach the half-way mark, please may we request that you share the crowdfund link with all your networks and invite them to do likewise, too. Here's the link! Please invite recipients.

As this is a staged rollout, for those users who have been switched, Twitter added a cookie called rweb_optin to your browser and configured it with a data value of 'side_no_out'. To switch back to the old Twitter interface, you simply need to delete that cookie.

If that doesn't work for you, another option is to change your user agent while on Twitter to the one used by Internet Explorer 11.

How to switch back to the old Twitter interface

There are two methods that have worked in the past to switch back to the old Twitter layout. The first method is the easiest as it just requires you to delete a cookie, but it is not reliable and users have reported it does not work anymore.

The latest tweets from @terryelaineh1. 13 Ways to Fix Your Age-Related Back Pain. As your spine ages, you may start feeling some aches and pains. Degenerative changes in discs and joints, spinal and spondylolisthesis are the three most.

The other method that I tested and that still works is to change your browser's user agent to the one used by Internet Explorer 11. As IE 11 does not support Twitter's new interface, the will give you the old instead.

Method 1: Change browser useragent to Internet Explorer 11

A method that continues to work is to change the browser's useragent string to the one used by Internet Explorer 11 when using Twitter. As Twitter's new layout does not support Internet Explorer 11, they switch you to old the layout.

To do this, you need a browser extension that will switch the useragent based on a domain. We have tested this method with Google's User-Agent Switcher for Chrome extension and for Firefox you can use the User-Agent Switcher and Manager extension.

For this guide, we will use Chrome and the User-Agent Switcher extension as an example.

  1. Install the User-Agent Switcher extension in Chrome.
  2. Right-click on the extension button that appears in the toolbar and select options.
  3. A list of useragents that you can switch to will now be listed. We now need to add a user agent for Internet Explorer 11. To do so, enter the following information for each shown field below and press Add.
    1. New User-agent name: Internet Explorer 11
    2. New User-Agent String: Mozilla/5.0 (compatible, MSIE 11, Windows NT 6.3; Trident/7.0; rv:11.0) like Gecko
    3. Group: Internet Explorer
    4. Append?: Replace
    5. Indicator Flag: IE1

When the information is entered, it should look like the following image.

  4. Now that a useragent for IE 11 has been created, we want to force it to be used when using Twitter. To do that, click on the Permanent Spoof List option and enter twitter.com in the Domainfield and select Internet Explorer 11 as your useragent as shown below. When done, click on the Add button.
  5. You can now close the options screen for the User-Agent Switcher.

As long as this extension is enabled, it will automatically switch your useragent when on Twitter.com to Internet Explorer 11 and you should get the older interface back.

Method 2: Remove rweb_optin Cookie (Limited success)

In order to switch back to the older Twitter layout, you need to delete the rweb_optin cookie. In the following steps we will use the EditThisCookie extension for Chrome, but Firefox users can also use the Cookie Manager extension.

  1. Download and install the EditThisCookie extension into Chrome.
  2. Visit https://www.twitter.com
  3. While on Twitter, click on the cookie button in the top right-hand corner of your screen to open EditThisCookie.
  4. This will open a list of cookies associated with the open web page, which in this case is Twitter.
  5. Scroll down until you see a cookie named rweb_optin and click on it to open it. Once opened, click on the trash can icon as indicated in the image below to delete the cookie.
  6. Once the cookie is deleted, close all of your browser Windows and open Chrome again.
  7. When you go to Twitter you will now be shown the old interface.

It should be noted that as this is a staged rollout, you are able to continue using the older interface. It will probably come to a time where this will no longer work and everyone gets the new template.

Twitter has finally shut down the platform's legacy theme on June 1, 2020, forcing all desktop users to use the social network's new mobile-inspired layout.

Twitter

This happened after Twitter rolled out the new UI in July 2019 and, beginning with May 2020, it started displaying a warning that the legacy version of Twitter will shut down for everyone on June 1st.

While, previously, there were some workarounds to re-enable the old version of twitter.com either by changing your web browsers useragent to Internet Explorer 11 or by removing the rweb_optin cookie, they no longer work.

Since Twitter's legacy version was shut down, there is no point switching to an unsupported browser or messing around with cookies as the old theme is no longer delivered but it will instead display a 'This browser is no longer support' error.

GoodTwitter2 and Tampermonkey to the rescue

Back To 60 One Voice Twitter

Luckily, even though Twitter no longer makes it possible to use their web client with the legacy layout, this Tampermonkey userscript dubbed GoodTwitter2 (developed by Bl4Cc4t) will re-arrange Twitter's new interface to make it look good again.

As its creator describes it, GoodTwitter2 'is by no means a full recreation of the old design, it is more like a hybrid between the two.'

After installing the userscript in your Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox web browser using the TamperMonkey userscript manager, you will get the legacy navbar back, you will have your Twitter profile back on the left side of the interface, and you'll no longer have to use the mobile layout on your desktop.

Installing GoodTwitter2 for a usable Twitter UI

To install the GoodTwitter2 userscript in your Chrome or Firefox browser you will first have to install Tampermonkey and then load the script from the GitHub repository using these steps:

  • Install Tampermonkey from the Chrome Webstore or the Firefox Add-Ons site.
  • Click on this link which will trigger Tampermonkey to prompt you with an installation screen.
  • Click install and you’re done (if you're a Chrome user).

Unfortunately, Firefox users will have to trade security for convenience because, for the script to work, they also need to completely disable Content Security Policy (CSP) by going to about:config and change the security.csp.enable flag to false.

CSP is a security standard that helps detect and mitigate Cross Site Scripting (XSS), clickjacking, and various other data injection attacks that can lead to data theft and malware infections.

Once installed, you can access GoodTwitter2's settings from Twitter's interface by clicking on your profile icon on the top right corner, going to 'Security and privacy,' and clicking on the GoodTwitter2 entry under General settings.
