Ranunculus Varieties

The Colorado State University Guide to Poisonous Plants database lists trees, shrubs and perennials that can be harmful to animals. The Poisonous Plant Guide is constructed to enable location of a plant by either knowing the common or botanical name of the plant. Ranunculus can grow well in zones 3–10 but you must lift in zones 3-7. Since planting Ranunculus bulbs in the Fall is only advisable for Zones 8 - 10, they are one of the rare varieties that can be stored until Spring (if purchased in the Fall). We recommend that they are stored in a cool, dry, place until you're ready to plant in early Spring.

Ranunculus

Ranunculus Plant Features

The bright, peony-like flowers of ranunculus make a delightful addition to early-spring flower borders, containers, or bouquets. These cool-weather bulbs are treated as annuals in most of the country, but in select regions with cool, mild winters (such as Seattle), these bulbs will winter over and be perennial. Ranunculus is a sun lover that grows 6 to 12 inches tall and develops round, crepe-paper-like flowers in jewel-tone colors including yellow, orange, red, salmon, and purple. Because ranunculus thrives in cool weather, it's an excellent choice for pots and planters packed with other early-bird bloomers. Ranunculus is deer resistant. Hardy in cooler sections of zones 8-10.
