Vivaldi House

All music lovers always connect the city of Venice with the famous composer Antonio Vivaldi.

The great composer of Baroque music was indeed born in Venice and lived and worked here most of his life. But those who visit Venice, looking for evidence of him becoming one of the greatest violinists of all time, will probably be disappointed, because in addition to having little information about his life, little is left in his city.

Vivaldi died in a small house that was where the Sacher Hotel is today, right behind the opera house. More specifically, the house was where the Sacher Gift Shop is. There is a “Music Mile Star” in the Kaerntnerstrasse commemorating the composer. Site of Vivaldi’s Cemetery. Named after one of the composer’s most notable works, the Vivaldi House was designed to be a safe and cozy space for all four seasons. The group of 12 Franklin High School students worked with architects from Mithun throughout the fall to design this home, taking into consideration their client, a person experiencing homelessness in Seattle.

But we know that little Antonio was baptized in the beautiful Gothic church of San Giovanni in Bragora, the parish of his family, in May 1678.

In fact, in this wonderful church there is a plaque dedicated to him next to the baptismal font. We do not know however, which was his house, but we can imagine a child and adolescent in St Mark's Basilica with his father, who was a violinist.

Ten years after his mother introduced him to an ecclesiastical career and Antonio went to study theology in the church of San Geminianus, in front of St Mark's Basilica, the jewel of the Renaissance destroyed by Napoleon.

In 1703 he was ordained a priest in the church of San Giovanni in Oleo which was also destroyed in the 800s.

He worked as a violin teacher in the Pietà Church from 1703 to 1720, but the current church overlooking the Riva degli Schiavoni is not the one known by Vivaldi, because the building was rebuilt in neoclassical style in 1740.

Antonio Vivaldi also worked as a theatre manager in the famous Sant'Angelo Theatre and it is where he wrote his most famous works. The theatre, which overlooked the Grand Canal, was destroyed in 1804 and replaced by a hotel.

Around 1730s he left Venice never to return, and died a poor and forgotten man in Vienna and buried in a mass grave with no tombstone.

The Manor House has four rooms with sizes ranging from 300 – 400 sq ft; allowing guests ample space. These fully air conditioned, non- smoking rooms are exquisitely decorated with real and reproductive antiques such as two charming oversized chairs and a writing/work desk. Both wireless and wired high-speed internet are standard in the rooms.

Each room comes with a deluxe king bed draped in luxury linens and a “feather-light” duvet. For those who are traveling with toddlers or an additional guest, a roll out bed or crib is provided. (Additional charges apply for more than 2 guests).

“I’ve been going to Restaurant506 at Sanford House for nearly two years, at least a couple times a month. Never been disappointed. Upscale but relaxed ambiance, great staff, friendly smiles, and – above all – GREAT FOOD! I’ve been there for Brunch and Dinner; they provide distinct but equally pleasant experiences. Brunch value is amazing – you can’t get food and service of this quality at this price anywhere else.”

“My sister and I had brunch here this morning. It was delicious. The meal started with a plate (or two) of mini muffins and whipped butter. Then, I had the almond crusted trout with beurre blanc, snap peas, and grape tomatoes. The fish was crispy on top and the portions were generous. My sister had the chicken and waffle with cherry bacon maple syrup. The chicken and waffle were a perfect mix of savory/sweet. We both had the bottomless mimosas which my favorite flavors were the passionfruit/strawberry and the grapefruit. Service was excellent: our waiter, Chad, was very attentive and helpful. The atmosphere was delightful: situated in the downstairs level of a bed and breakfast.”

“This is a lovely place for brunch. The wait staff is extraordinary. Very attentive and personable. Our waiter ,James, was knowledgeable, friendly, outgoing, but yet very professional. He made excellent suggestions and facilitated an exceptional meal. Make sure to try the bacon maple syrup and braised pork Benedict. I will be dreaming of both for a while. They even included a strawberry pudding for my birthday! Thank you 506 for a great morning.”

“My wife and I have been meaning to check out this restaurant for a while now. It is part of The Sanford House Inn and Spa (www.thesanfordhouse.com) which we also have yet to experience. After the meal we took some time to hang out in the courtyard under a nice gazebo.

The food & service were both great. The chef really does a great job on his dishes. The menu changes every so often as you would expect with any good restaurant with a good chef. My wife ordered an amazing chicken and waffles with cherries and bacon while I opted for the crusted trout with shiitake mushrooms and vegetables. Price point with tip (no drinks) $38. My biggest takeaway here is that this is a great place for a really classy meal right in downtown Arlington. Very convenient.”

“This place is such a hidden gem! The rooms are very quaint and charming. It reminded me of being in a fancy English house and we were there for high tea. We sat near the window and was greeted by our waiter. We ordered a few cocktails and ordered our food. Here is what we ordered (and we will probably be coming back soon for more!)

I ordered the crusted trout. THIS IS A MUST-HAVE. I was blown away by the flavors and only wish that I could have some right now! My husband had the crab cake benedict. Of course, you cannot go wrong with crab cakes. It tasted amazing.”
